“Circle dancing is magic. It speaks to us through millennia
from the depths of human memory.”
Milan Kundera
In 2011 circle dance teacher Karoline Streicher and I made our first collaboration. The people who came to our celebratory afternoon of dance and storytelling learnt to dance some traditional Russian and Eastern European circle dances, and then integrated these dances into the archetypal story of ‘Vasilisa the Wise’, a Russian folk tale of loss and courage.
Since then we have taken ‘Vasilisa the Wise’ to Worthing, London and Berlin.
We have gone on to collaborate on two more circle dance and storytelling projects; ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’ and ‘Weaving Wisdom’.
Karoline has now set up a new circle dance and arts space in Berlin, and we have created work specifically for that space.
I have created tellings of ‘The Snow Maiden’ and ‘Demeter and Persephone’ for the Lancing Circle Dance Group, these tellings incorporated dances chosen and taught by Julie Beaumont.
